Walnut Creek is a suburb of San Francisco, located just east of the Bay Area. The city is home to over 120 restaurants offering a wide variety of cuisine.

The city’s historic downtown is the center of cultural activity and is a thriving shopping destination. The downtown has a mix of shops, restaurants, and bars. It is also home to many events throughout the year.

During the day, you can explore the historic buildings and enjoy the shopping and dining experience. In the evening, head over to the Rooftop Bar for a cocktail or glass of wine with amazing views of downtown. The bar has a retractable roof and heaters for those chilly nights. If you are in the mood for something a bit more casual, check out Parada, which is part of chef Carlos Altamirano’s Peruvian restaurant group. You can rock the small plate menu or go all-in with a ribeye.

Walnut Creek’s name is derived from the fact that it was once the meeting point of four land grants. The town was originally named The Corners when it was first laid out by New York native Hiram Penniman in 1856. He is credited with realigning the town’s primary north-south road away from the downtown creek and establishing what would become Main Street. Pioneer Homer Shuey filed a subdivision map in 1872 that established the downtown street pattern that remains to this day.

In the 1960s, the city began to invest in downtown infrastructure. A new library replaced the Carnegie Library, and the Civic Arts Department was formed. Larkey Park opened in 1959, and it now includes a swim center, tennis centers, community meeting rooms, two lakes, and more than 22 sports fields.

Today, the City of Walnut Creek has more than 2500 acres of parks and open space with over 2726 miles of trails. The City has a dedicated staff of Park and Open Space managers that work closely with the community to ensure these public assets are well maintained and protected for the benefit of current and future generations.

The city’s history is a rich and varied one. The people of Walnut Creek have a long tradition of civic engagement and are committed to preserving their beautiful city. The city council has passed more than a dozen ballot initiatives in recent years that have improved the quality of life for residents and visitors.
