Mental Health Benefits Of Qi Gong

Jun 24

Qi Gong is an ancient Chinese practice that brings together meditation, breath and movement to support your wellbeing. It has been shown to strengthen and balance all of the body’s systems (nervous, digestive, respiratory, skeletal-muscular, hormonal and gynaecological) while harmonising the flow of energy throughout your entire body.

In East Asian energy philosophy, qi (pronounced “chee”) is a force that flows through the body in energy pathways called meridians. Research has found that qigong stimulates these meridians, which may help to improve your circulation and increase the flow of energy throughout your body. It has also been found to improve the function of your immune system and help to reduce stress.

The calming effects of qigong are likely due to the combination of slow movements, mindfulness and controlled breathing. This combination calms the sympathetic side of your autonomic nervous system, which helps regulate things like blood pressure and heart rate. The practice also encourages deep, diaphragmatic breathing to oxygenate the body and cultivate Qi Gong and Mental Health.

Many health challenges, from high blood pressure and chronic illness to emotional frustration and spiritual crisis, can be addressed with a regular qigong practice. The slow, gentle movements warm and stretch tendons, ligaments and muscles; build strength and flexibility; and boost immune function. They also stimulate your parasympathetic nervous system, which regulates digestion, heart rate and breathing.

Research shows that qigong can reduce symptoms of depression, anxiety and insomnia. This improvement may be a result of the body’s natural endorphin and endocannabinoid production, which are chemicals that help to alleviate negative emotions and promote a sense of well-being. It’s important to note that these changes can happen quickly for some people and slow down over time for others – everyone’s experience is unique.

Studies have also found that qigong can help to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. In fact, researchers have even been able to show that certain forms of qigong are as effective as some medications.

In a recent systematic review and meta-analysis published in July 2020, researchers reviewed 19 randomized controlled trials that included participants of all ages and with various health conditions. Researchers found that qigong significantly reduced inflammation and improved overall quality of life for those who participated in the study.

The research is encouraging, but there is still more to be explored with a practice that has been around for so long. More research is needed to investigate how qigong impacts the immune system and why it is effective in reducing inflammatory responses.
